What it actually is
An entry gate is a walk-in gate built into a wood fence line, framed and pickets matched to the fence on either side of it so it reads as part of the run rather than an obvious break in it. This is a different job than a driveway gate: a wood entry gate is sized for a person, hung on standard hinges and a latch, not built for vehicle traffic or automation. Some contractors call this a pedestrian gate, same product, a walk-in opening built into the fence rather than across the drive.
A gate at the side yard
The most common spot for one is the side yard, that narrow run between your house and the property line that needs its own opening so nobody has to walk all the way around through the front. A side yard gate gets the same treatment as any other entry gate on the line, matched pickets, proper hinge and latch hardware, built to close the run rather than leave it open.
Why someone picks it
Most of the time this is not a standalone decision. It comes up because your fence line needs a real entry point somewhere along it, at a side yard, a walkway, or wherever people actually come and go on foot without using the drive. A gate built to match the fence keeps that opening from looking like an afterthought cut into an otherwise finished line.
What holds a gate true
A gate carries weight differently than a flat run of fence does, all of it hanging off one side on the hinges, which is why a gate post has to be set more solidly than a standard line post. Getting that post right the first time is most of what keeps your gate hanging level and latching cleanly for years, rather than sagging and dragging the way an under-built one eventually does. A dropped gate is the most common repair call there is, and it almost always starts at the post.
